Playmates and Prejudice
What happens when you show kindergarteners a picture of a white child and a picture of a black child, then ask them to choose one of them for a playmate? Get on the Bus tells of a recent study that did just this, and the results were not what the teachers expected.I can't say I'm really surprised at the results. Isn't it human nature to lean toward the familiar in our experience? Is it necessarily a bad thing if you merely select the "friend color" that you're used to seeing every day?
